Garages, car dealers and the motor trade in France

Franchised dealers and agents, used car traders, mechanical and body repair garages, truck workshops, tyre centres, parts distributors and motorcycle shops: for suppliers of workshop equipment, parts and lubricants, garage software vendors and service companies targeting the aftermarket.

Our database for France holds 1,577,933 records (as of 4 November 2026); they are not yet assigned to industries. The quote states the size available for this industry.

Export of the whole industry: €229 (full price). Selections by region, department or your own filters are quoted on request.

Official statistics: 120,636 businesses in France according to Eurostat, structural business statistics (sbs_ovw_act) (reference year 2024, data as of 30 September 2026). Division 45 wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles. This is the size of the market, not the size of our database.

Targeting the automotive aftermarket

Start from subclasses 45.20A and 45.20B for workshops, 45.11Z and 45.19Z for sales, 45.31Z and 45.32Z for parts, then choose the area. Requiring email and website narrows the list to businesses that publish them.

Our records do not yet carry a NAF code: selecting by activity (NAF subclass) will only be possible for records matched with the Sirene database (matching in progress). The quote states what can be done today: area and required fields.

The official figure shown covers all of division 45, motorcycles included. It matches neither the number of garages nor the number of establishments, as one company may run several sites.

Price of the whole industry: €229. A selection by region, sub-industry or required fields is quoted individually; the whole-industry price is not a price promise for the filtered selection.

What counts as Motor trade and repair

The sector is division 45 of NAF rév. 2: sale of motor vehicles (45.1), maintenance and repair (45.2), sale of parts and accessories (45.3) and motorcycles (45.40Z). Maintenance and repair include mechanical and electrical repair, bodywork, painting, windscreen replacement and tyre fitting.

Several neighbouring trades are classified elsewhere: vehicle roadworthiness testing (71.20A, under Architects and engineering firms), towing and roadside assistance (52.21Z), car rental (77.11), fuel retail (47.30Z, under retail) and vehicle manufacturing (division 29, under manufacturing).

SIV accreditation and used vehicle sales: two regimes to know

Two administrative procedures apply to a large part of the sector. Neither is among the columns of our export.

SIV accreditation
To carry out vehicle registration formalities online on behalf of private customers, a motor trade professional needs an accreditation for the vehicle registration system (SIV), issued by the prefect of the département of the head office, and an approval from the tax authority (DGFIP) to collect registration taxes. The company agreement requires, among other things, legal existence and professional activity of at least three years.
Used vehicle sales
A business selling second-hand goods, vehicles included, files a prior declaration with the prefecture or sub-prefecture and keeps a register of second-hand goods, also called the police register (Entreprendre Service Public). It must give the buyer of a used vehicle written information including make, model, date of first registration and mileage.

Not in the export

  • makes represented and dealer contracts
  • SIV accreditation number or DGFIP approval
  • workshop equipment and number of work bays
  • volumes of vehicles sold or repaired
  • names of managers, workshop managers or sales managers

The 15 columns supplied are described on the export page.

Franchised dealer, agent or independent garage: what the NAF code does not tell you

The NAF code does not distinguish a franchised dealer from an agent or an independent garage. A garage that also sells used cars may be classified under 45.11Z or 45.20A depending on its main activity. To cover the whole aftermarket, select both subclasses together, then use the website to see which makes are represented.

Fast-fit and car centre networks have one record per centre. If you are targeting the network’s head office rather than each workshop, group the records by the siren column once matching with Sirene is done: a franchisee has its own SIREN, a branch carries the network’s.

Heavy vehicles are a market of their own: workshops under 45.20B, sale of lorries, trailers and motorhomes under 45.19Z. For a supplier of commercial vehicle parts, these two subclasses form a target separate from light vehicle garages.

Example request
