Energy, water and waste companies in France

Electricity producers, energy suppliers, heating and cooling network operators, drinking water and sewerage companies, waste collectors, sorting centres and remediation firms: for equipment makers, laboratories, plant hire companies and maintenance providers who work with facility operators.

Our database for France holds 1,577,933 records (as of 4 November 2026); they are not yet assigned to industries. The quote states the size available for this industry.

Export of the whole industry: €359 (full price). Selections by region, department or your own filters are quoted on request.

Official statistics: 60,221 businesses in France according to Eurostat, structural business statistics (sbs_ovw_act) (reference year 2024, data as of 30 September 2026). Sections D electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (47,330) and E water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation (12,891) combined. This is the size of the market, not the size of our database.

Isolating one link in the chain

First choose the link you are targeting (generation, supply, water, sewerage, collection, sorting, remediation), then the area. The classes of section E combine easily to cover a complete waste chain, from collection to treatment.

Our records do not yet carry a NAF code: selecting by activity (NAF subclass) will only be possible for records matched with the Sirene database (matching in progress). The quote states what can be done today: area and required fields.

The official figure shown adds up sections D and E for France. It distinguishes neither the energy technology nor whether operators are public or private.

Price of the whole industry: €359. A selection by region, sub-industry or required fields is quoted individually; the whole-industry price is not a price promise for the filtered selection.

What counts as Energy, water and waste

The sector combines two sections of NAF rév. 2: section D (division 35: electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning) and section E (divisions 36 to 39: water, sewerage, waste and remediation). INSEE classifies electricity generated by waste incineration under 38.21Z, together with waste treatment, not under 35.11Z.

Installing equipment at customers’ premises, such as heating or air conditioning (43.22B), is construction: see Construction and civil engineering. Trading in waste and scrap without real processing is wholesale (46.77Z), and building sewer networks is civil engineering (42.21Z).

NAF rév. 2Official INSEE titleWhat the code covers
35.11ZProduction of electricitypower plants of all sources, renewables included; excluding waste incineration (38.21Z)
35.14ZTrade of electricitysale of electricity to consumers, electricity brokers and agents
35.30ZSteam and air conditioning supplysteam and hot water for heating, chilled water for cooling
36.00ZWater collection, treatment and supplydrinking water; operation of irrigation canals is also classified here
37.00ZSeweragesewer networks, wastewater treatment plants, emptying of septic tanks
38.11ZCollection of non-hazardous wastehousehold and business waste, construction waste; hazardous waste under 38.12Z

Installations and services: three official sources

In this sector, public sources mainly describe installations and services, rarely companies with contact details. They help you cross-check a list rather than replace it.

Electricity generating installations
The national register of electricity generation and storage installations, published on ODRÉ under the Licence Ouverte, is produced by RTE from information supplied by the network operators. It lists installations connected to the public grids (status at 31 August 2026) with technology, capacity and municipality, but without the operator’s SIREN number or contact details.
Water and sewerage services
The national SISPEA observatory gives an overview of the organisation and performance of public drinking water and sewerage services. These services are run by local authorities together with their agents and concession holders, so the contact for a water network is not always a company.
Waste treatment installations
Sorting centres, shredding platforms and transfer stations subject to authorisation or registration appear in the classified installations database on Géorisques, which can be searched by heading of the nomenclature, for example 2794 “green waste shredding”.

Not in the export

  • installed capacity, technology and commissioning date of installations
  • ICPE status, headings and prefectoral orders
  • public service concession contracts and local authority clients
  • tonnages collected or treated
  • names of site managers or HSE managers

The 15 columns supplied are described on the export page.

Operator, owner or local authority: who is the right contact?

A solar farm or wind farm may belong to a company set up for that project alone, while operation and maintenance are contracted to another firm. If your offer concerns servicing or insuring installations, target operators and service providers, and check on each record’s website who does what.

For water and waste, the client is often a local authority awarding a contract or a concession. Municipalities and groupings of municipalities are classified as public administration (division 84) and are not part of this sector: they are listed under Local authorities and public sector.

A company has only one main NAF code. A group that collects, sorts and recovers waste appears under just one of these activities; to cover the whole chain, select 38.11Z, 38.12Z, 38.21Z and 38.32Z together.

Example request

We rent out mobile shredders and are looking for waste collection and recovery companies (38.11Z, 38.32Z) in the départements of Brittany and Pays de la Loire, with a phone number, for a call campaign followed by a letter. How many records are already matched with Sirene?

Questions

Energy, water and waste: frequently asked questions

The sector follows NAF divisions 35 to 39. A public body classified under 36.00Z or 37.00Z can therefore appear, whereas a municipality classified as public administration does not. If you only want private companies, say so in your request: the legal form column is filled only after matching with Sirene, and the quote shows how many records it applies to.

No. The export contains companies and the contact details they publish, not the technical characteristics of installations. The national register on ODRÉ gives technology, capacity and municipality, but not the operator’s SIREN.

Yes. INSEE classifies asbestos removal under 39.00Z, “Remediation activities and other waste management services”, together with decontamination of soil and sites. Demolition work stays in construction (43.11Z).
